FAILED THE
POTATO
TEST.

An extremely large lump with an extremely small paperwork problem.

Welcome to NOTATO: the home of misplaced confidence, overly serious investigations, and one vegetable-shaped misunderstanding.

ARCHIVE / 17 MAR2022AP / ABC NEWS

In 2021, Colin and Donna Craig-Brown unearthed an enormous tuber near Hamilton, New Zealand. They named it Dug and submitted it for a world-record potato assessment. It weighed 7.8 kilograms.

But scientific testing identified it as a gourd tuber, so the application was disqualified. The couple had even built a little cart to pull Dug around. AP/ABC reported the outcome on 17 March 2022.

That is the real story behind this independently created meme project.

Looks convincing.
Check anyway.

Three methods. A deeply unqualified specimen. Choose a test and let our imaginary department complicate an already complicated lunch.

03 / THE OPINION PAGESHIGHLY OPINIONATED COMMENTARY

All the dirt.
None of the dignity.

A fictional newsroom for things that looked right until somebody asked one more question.

FROM THE IMAGINARY EDITOR’S DESK

Confidence is not a vegetable group.

Somewhere, a very serious person owns a very serious clipboard. Their job is to look at things that appear to be potatoes and ask the question nobody at the barbecue wanted to hear: “Are we absolutely sure?”

We have chosen to make this an entire personality.

NOTATO is for the confidently incorrect, the prematurely congratulated, and anyone who has ever arrived at the right building for the wrong event. You can look the part. You can have the backstory. You can bring an unreasonable amount of enthusiasm. Occasionally, the category still says no.

Our fictional newsroom follows that feeling wherever it goes. Very little is breaking. Almost everything requires correction. The chief correspondent is a lump, and the editorial board has requested another look at the lump.

A FORMAL COMPLAINT ABOUT FORMS

Please explain the entire situation again.

There should be a special form for a misunderstanding that gets out of hand. One small box for “what you thought was happening.” Several additional pages for “what was actually happening.” A final checkbox that simply reads: “Oh.”

That is the spirit of this place.

Take your incorrect labels, suspiciously confident captions, and objects with the energy of an employee who has no idea which department hired them. Turn them into a notice. Add an unnecessarily stern stamp. Give the most insignificant incident in your camera roll the presentation of a national emergency.

The joke does not need an explanation longer than the image. The explanation is our problem. We have already assigned it a file number and placed it in a folder marked OTHER.

LETTERS WE HAVE NOT RECEIVED

“But it has such potato energy.”

An excellent observation from an imaginary reader. Unfortunately, potato energy is not an accepted unit of measurement in this imaginary office.

Neither is “look at it.”
Nor “come on, obviously.”

Nor a photograph taken from a particularly convincing angle. This leaves us with a useful rule for the comment section: a good caption should make the situation worse.

Give the lump a terrible job interview. Send it an invitation addressed to the wrong species. Make it the employee of the month at a place that cannot explain what it does.

Keep the actual news link attached when sharing the origin story. Everything else can be gloriously overqualified paperwork.

04 / THE GROWTH PLANONE FILED, THREE PROPOSED

A completely
overthought
growth plan.

Four increasingly elaborate ways to keep a very small joke going. The first is filed; the rest are creative plans with no fixed dates.

  1. 01FILED

    File the
    correction.

Established the NOTATO identity, put the origin story somewhere easy to find, and set up the project’s own links. The distinction between the historical report and our made-up paperwork stays clear. Every investigation needs a starting point. Ours is a carefully labelled misunderstanding with an excellent name.

  2. 02PROPOSED

    Equip the
    comment section.

Prepare caption templates, reaction images, and ridiculous correction notices people can remix. The aim is a recognisable visual language: serious typography, unserious conclusions, and the unmistakable feeling that somebody has just called a meeting that could have been a single confused look.

  3. 03PROPOSED

    Open the
    public hearing.

Invite people to share their best cases of mistaken identity on the token’s Pump.fun page. Collect the funniest captions into an occasional editorial selection. A household object with a secret career? A snack that resembles your landlord? The proposed hearings have no legal authority and remarkably low standards of evidence.

  4. 04PROPOSED

    Keep the
    file open.

Build an archive of the strongest jokes, refresh the correction notices, and let the recurring bits develop their own ridiculous history. Some ideas deserve an ambitious final destination. This one deserves a folder that keeps getting thicker every time somebody says, “Wait, one more thing.”

Some answers required extra forms.

What does NOTATO mean?

“Not a potato.” A correction compact enough to become a name. The ticker is $NOTATO. Around here, the identity is built from deadpan notices, absurdly formal complaints, and the particular embarrassment of discovering that your first assumption was doing all the work.

Is the origin story real?

Yes. The factual recap above links directly to the dated AP/ABC article. The newsroom, departments, forms, reader letters, and public hearings on this page are our fictional additions. If something sounds like an official vegetable office, we have probably made it up.

Is this an official or affiliated project?

No. NOTATO is an independent meme project inspired by a reported story. It does not represent Dug’s owners, Guinness World Records, AP, or ABC. The artwork is adapted from a news photograph by Donna Craig-Brown / AP; the jokes and visual identity here are this project’s own interpretation.

Where is the contract, and is there an X account?

The contract address is in the bar at the top of the page and in the contract box at the end of the report, each with a copy button. NOTATO is on Solana, and the Pump.fun buttons open the token’s own Pump.fun page. There is no X account: this website and that Pump.fun page are the project links. Check that any address you use matches this one.

What am I supposed to do here?

Read the case. Try the completely unofficial test. Invent a caption that makes a mildly confusing object sound like a serious administrative incident. The more straight-faced the presentation, the better. There is something deeply satisfying about treating a ridiculous thing with far too much procedural respect.
